Rohit Bakshi, known for his role as Ankush in the popular Star Plus show “Anupamaa,” has recently rejoined the cast after several months. Having last been seen before the show’s leap, Bakshi is now back in action and shares details about his return and his recent role.
Reflecting on His Absence
Reflecting on his absence, Bakshi said, “I definitely missed being a part of ‘Anupamaa.’ Working with such a great team, including my co-actors, crew, and Rajan Shahi ji, for 1.5 years was an amazing experience.
When the show took its initial five-year leap, we expected a break of about 1 to 1.5 months, but it turned out to be a bit longer. However, the team was very considerate and encouraged us to work on other projects during this period since they were unsure about the exact return date.”
A Pleasant Surprise
His return came as a pleasant surprise. “Recently, I got a call about a new track they were planning and was asked if I was available. I was eager to return as I am always ready for ‘Anupamaa,’ and fortunately, the shooting started soon.
Although my involvement will be for a limited number of episodes and not on a continuous basis, the team mentioned they were unsure about how the story would progress.”
Character Transformation
Bakshi’s character Ankush has undergone significant changes, shifting from a negative to a positive role. He said, “What the makers are bringing with Ankush’s return will be exciting for the audience. Ankush’s love for Anuj is still strong, and I believe viewers will appreciate this track.
However, you’ll have to wait a bit to see what changes and developments occur. It’s not right for me to reveal too much as everything will air in just 2-3 days.”
Challenges of Character Transformation
The transformation of Ankush’s character has been challenging.
“The shift from a negative to a positive role has been quite complex. Ankush’s role was challenging because he had to handle complicated relationships. On one hand, he deeply loves his brother Anuj, and on the other, he is married to a wife who is more concerned with property and material matters. This often puts him in difficult situations where he has to choose between maintaining harmony at home and standing up for what is right.”
He continued, “Initially, Ankush was confused by his wife’s demands and tried to balance her expectations with his loyalty to his brother. Over time, Ankush realized that sticking to his principles was more important than pleasing his wife.
He decides to support Anuj and Anupamaa, showing his shift towards doing what is right. As an actor, portraying this internal struggle was a major challenge, as it involved depicting the emotional conflict between family obligations and moral integrity. This decision was not easy and reflects the struggles many people face in balancing family dynamics.”
Industry Changes Over 22 Years
Bakshi also discussed changes in the industry over his 22-year career.
“In recent years, producers have been experimenting with new concepts on television to bring fresh content to viewers. Despite these efforts, the industry is still heavily influenced by TRP ratings. If new concepts do not perform well in terms of TRP, attention often shifts back to familiar themes, like traditional saas-bahu dramas, which have a proven track record with viewers.”
Challenges in the Television Landscape
He mentioned that the television landscape has become more challenging.
“While earlier shows were carefully planned with a full script before filming began, today’s production process is faster-paced. Scripts are often developed on the go, and actors receive scenes with very little advance notice.”
Interest in OTT Platforms
Regarding future plans, Bakshi expressed interest in working on OTT platforms. “Who wouldn’t want to? Of course, I am considering working on OTT platforms. The unique aspect of OTT is that you work on a show for 2-3 months, which is a very different concept that viewers enjoy. The audience for OTT is different from TV viewers, and film audiences are universal.”
“I really want to do good work, whether it’s TV, OTT, or films. I am open to any opportunity that challenges and excites me. The role should inspire me and make me eager to perform. I continuously think about doing OTT work and have started meeting with casting directors and others to express my interest in OTT series. If the right opportunity arises, they will definitely contact me.”
Upcoming Projects
Regarding upcoming projects, Bakshi said, “Nothing concrete yet. There is nothing solid on paper at the moment, but discussions are ongoing. Once something is finalized, it will be the right time to discuss it. I will definitely let you know when something concrete is in place.”
